The Mission That Matters

Before the Internet, TV’s, DVD’s, X-boxes, radios or even books, people used to entertain and educate one another with WORDS. It’s amazing but true! Poetry Slams put a new twist on that tradition. Slams are literary game shows, contests where people come together to share their creativity and experiences for the entertainment and edification of the crowd.

The Kalamazoo Poetry Slam is dedicated to bringing poetry out of the stuffy halls of academia and putting it back where it belongs, in the hearts and ears of the people. One way we do this is by sending a team of local poets to compete at the National Poetry Slam, each year. Another way is by bringing performance poets from all across the nation to Kalamazoo to perform for you.

Anyone may sign-up to read in the open-mic or compete in the slam. All ages are welcome to participate, however, those under 18 should be accompanied by a parent. Also, be informed, we make no attempt to censor or censure. The show is considered “Rated-R” for language. Everyone has the right to speak their mind, providing they do so within the format of the show, and every member of the audience has a right to respond appropriately to performances with cheers and applause or hisses and boos.

The Kalamazoo Poetry Slam is one of over a hundred certified slam venues around the world. Slams are certified through Poetry Slam Inc. a non-profit organization which administrates the National Poetry Slam and the Individual World Poetry Slam.
